Lake Como : The best things to do with children

Italy is a wonderful travel destination with children. With stunning architecture and natural landscapes, amazing food and cultural offer, it's hard not to like everything about it. If you've decided to choose Lake Como as a base for your next holidays, here are our best addresses to make this a trip your children will remember.

Lake Como : picture perfect

Lake Como is located in Lombardy, just 85km from Milan. You only need one-hour drive to completely change environment. Say Ciao tothehuge and noisymetropole and benvenuto to this little peace of heaven, amongst which you will find transparent water, postcard hills, and dreamy villas. It is not a surprise that A listers and multimillionaires have selected this place for their holiday homes. The most famous one being George Clooney. The actor fell in love with this area and is even lives there during part of the year! And surely since he got his twins, he has discovered his new home under a different point of view. Because yes, Lake Como area really is a paradise for children

Our suggestions of activities you can do with your family

  •       Discover the wonders of Lake Como by boat

Come aboard with your apprentice sailor for an unforgettable trip by board on the lake ! You can take a ferry from Moltrasio to Bellagio to discover the villas located around the lake while enjoying the fantastic panoramic views from the boat. Another possibility is to rent a motorboat, which doesn’t require a boating licence, or a kayak to live the adventure with your own clan.

  •        Explore the surrounding villages

Lake Como is surrounded by many picture-postcard villages, which reveal architectural treasures and offer the possibility of many different walks to do with your family. We especially recommend visiting Tremezzina, where you will be able to explore the beautiful villa Carlotta museum and then enjoy its peaceful botanical garden. For cinema amateurs, you can go to the garden of Villa del Balbianello where many films have been shot, amongst them Star wars episode 2, which should please your little Jedi!

Another possibility is to discover the old town of Come, a little typically Italian town with beautiful Romanesque and Baroque churches, Piazza Volta and Piazza Duomo as well as asuperb 600-year old Cathedral and its bell tower. That said, children can easily get bored of cultural visits so it is important to alternate museums and walks to please everybody. So why not have a nice ice-cream and relax walking around the old Varenna harbour? If you like the medieval castles, don’t miss the Vezio Castle, which has an amazing view over the lake and falconry. The children will love the raptor show!

  •        Getting a break and relax on the beach

When you are on holidays on Lake Como you can avoid swimming. The children can put on their Canopea sun protective swimming suit and off they go for a day of farniente by the water! You will find many beaches, which offer the possibility of a real break in an idyllic place. If you prefer pebble beaches over sandy beaches, then you’re in for a treat. They are not huge but the landscape is so beautiful that you forget very quickly the long sandy beaches from the coast. We particularly loved the Ulisse Guzzi beach and also the one from Mandello di Lario and Dervio.

Make sure you get your sun protective swimwear before heading on holidays over here !
