c- How to take care of my swimming suit ?

In order to take the best care of your CANOPEA swimming suits, we have provided you with some care instructions on each product page on our website.

Here are some additional advice allowing you to increase the life expectancy of your favourite swimwear:
- After each use in the sea or in a swimming pool, we advise you to rinse your swimming suit with some warm clear water (30 degrees maximum).
- We advise you to dry your swimwear by laying it on a flat surface, away from the light, in order it to keep its shape and its original color.
- how to remove tough stains ? You can submerge the item in water mixed with some bicarbonate and then soak it for up to 1 hour maximum. After that you need to rinse the swimwear with clear water.
- If tiny grains of sand get stuck into the fabric, you can stretch the fabric a little to help removing them or soak the swimming suit up with some “Marseille¨ soap, scrubbing gently before rinsing it.
- At the end of the season, you can wash your swimming suit in a washing machine at 30 degrees selecting a low spin speed (400 turns per minute) and dry outside if possible.
- Be careful never mixing the colors when washing your swimwear.

d- Can I recycle my swimming suit or sale as a second hand?

In order to be environmentally friendly and responsible, we are glad to partner with the second hand website called Smala. We suggest you to have a look at their website in order to give a second life to your swimming suit.
You have two possibilities : having your swimming suit paid as it is upfront or receiving a 10% discount as a voucher on our website for your next purchase.

8. Our UV protective swimming suits

a. How are your swimwear UV protective ?

Our tops and UV protective swimming suits have been designed to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays.

Our UV protective swimming suits are mainly produced using ECONYL®, a recycled nylon fibre coming from fishnets and other textile waste. The very tight and ultra-resistant meshing of our fabrics allow to stop the UV rays for up to 98%, the maximum sun protective rating achievable for fabrics.

All our UV protective fabrics are UPF50+ and tested for more than 200 hours by laboratories to guaranty they withstand to the light, sunscreen, sea salt or chlorine.

b. What does UPF 50+ means ?

UPF50+ is the maximum sun protective rating achievable for fabrics. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor and is the sun protective rating measure for fabrics. It means UV transfer into skin. A protective rating of 25 will only let 1/25 of rays to go through which means only 4% of UVs. The lower the indicator is the the less you will be protected. For a maximum efficency, a UV protective top must be UPF 50+, blocking 98% of UVAs and UVBs.

c. What is the difference between UVAs and UVBs ?

There are two types of ultraviolets (UV) present in the sunlight. Both of them reach our skin: ultraviolets A (UVA) and ultraviolets B (UVB).

UVAs have a longer wavelenght. They go deeper into the skin. They are associated with skin aging, stains on the skin (sunspots) and wrinkles. They can also contribute to the risk of skin cancer.

UVBs rays are stronger and shorter, damaging the outer layers of your skin, which is why they’re largely responsible for sunburn, redness and blistering, but also a definite danger to your skin, with the potential to cause skin cancer.

d. What is the « sun capital » ?

For each skin, there is a maximum quantity of rays that the skin can be exposed to during its lifetime without increasing the risk of developing a disease.

It is like a tank full of water that would be given to each of us when we are born and which the level would go down each time we would stay under the sun. These days it is said that we go over the half of our sun capital before our 18 years old. That’s why it is very important for children and adults to protect their skin each time they go under the sun. And not only children…

e. How can your swimming suit protect more than a tee-shirt ?

A typical white dry cotton tee-shirt offers a UPF of 5 rating, which means it block 1/5 of sunrays, meaning about 20% of them.

https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/sun-protection.html

Once the tee-shirt is wet the UPF goes down to half of it, blocking only 10% of the sunrays. Indeed, once wet, the cotton fibres of your tee-shirt stretch and let the UVAs and UVBs going through and reach your skin.

f. What is Econyl® ?

Econyl is a 100% recycled and recyclable nylon fibre. Econyl is an environmentally sustainable alternative to nylon made from waste products. It is made entirely from ocean and landfill waste, such as industrial plastic, fabric scraps from clothing manufacturing companies, old carpets and "ghost nets". It has the same properties as nylon: this fiber is stretchy when woven, relatively tough, and easy to weave into tightly-knit garments and industrial textiles.

g. Do your swimming suit with long sleeves keep warm ?

No, our fabrics are made to be breathable and light. It seems to be a nonsense but wearing long sleeves allows the skin to breathe and to avoid dryness under the sun.

Some research studying Bedouins in the desert have shown that the heat under their dress and long sleeves was not that high. Long sleeves are protecting yourself from the heat as well as wearing a hat or staying in the shadow.

h. Shall I put sunblock under the UV protective top ?

All our swimming suits (except the boys shorts) and rash guard swimwear and tops are UPF 50+ certified by independent laboratories.

It means that 98% of UV rays are blocked when you are under the sun. Therefore it is not necessary to put suncream on the body parts covered by the swimming suit or covered by your UPF 50+ rash guard. However, it is necessary to put suncream on your hands, legs and face and to wear UV protective sunglasses and a hat in case of high sun exposure.

i. I am already an adult, do I need sun protection ?

Each one of us has a different level (and maximum) of sunrays their skin can absorb before getting damaged, which is called sun capital. Each time your skin is exposed to the sun this capital goes down. This decrease of sun capital increases the risks of skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to protect yourself all across your life, even when you are an adult.

j. It is rarely sunny where I go on holidays. Do I still need sun protection ?

Sun rays are made of UVBs and UVAs. In winter or in the less sunny areas the level of UVBs is getting down and they are less harmful but UVAs are still there. UVAs don’t burn your skin but are responsible of skin damages like brown stains called sunspots.

Therefore, you have to protect your skin from the sun as soon as you get exposed more than 15 minutes in winter in the mountain, or in summer even if there is cloudy weather and you are seating outside at a café or enjoying a walk.

k. Do I need to put some sunblock or to wear a sun protective rash guard if I have a dark skin?

Each skin need to be protected against UVs: staying in the shadow in the afternoon during the warmest hours of the day, wearing sun protective clothes and apply suncream minimum SPF 30 on the areas of your body not covered by your UPF50+ CANOPEA swimming suit and/or your UPF50+ rash guard.

l. I need vitamine D, isn’t it ?

Vitamin D is essential for bone health and immune system function. The body makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, but you can also get it from foods. Some people need supplements, but how much additional vitamin D you need will depend on various factors, including your age and where you live.

Vitamin D intake is generally quite low, since very few foods contain significant amounts. Foods that do contain vitamin D include fatty fish like salmon as well as fish liver oils. Egg yolks also contain small amounts, red meat, and in some countries milk and cereals are enriched with vitamin D.

Sun exposure is the most effective way to get enough vitamin D, but it doesn’t come without risk. Additionally, the amount of sunlight needed varies. Older individuals and dark-skinned people tend to produce less vitamin D in the skin.

However, it doesn’t take a lot of sun exposure to make vitamin D, and it’s best to limit your time in the sun to 10 to 15 minutes, exposing arms, legs, abdomen, and back.

A sun exposure between April and September will allow your body to create enough vitamin D for the whole year because it is stocked in our fatty tissues.

If you have a well balanced diet, a diversified nutrition and that you are getting out often you shouldn’t worry about your level of Vitamin D.

m. Is tanning dangerous ?

We would love to tell you that it isn’t but the truth is that it is dangerous. Everybody like feeling the sun on his or her skin, but if the skin gets tanned it means it reacts to the sun rays.

Skin cancer always appear after a deterioration of the skin cell DNA. In 90% of skin cancers, this DNA deterioration is the consequence of an excessive sun exposure and to the ultraviolet rays.

Skin cancer can therefore appear after many years. They are the consequence of the damaged caused by the UV rays to our cellular DNA.

On top of giving you wrinkles and stains on the skin, the sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer. Sunbathing is therefore an important factor of risk for the skin.
