Natural marble dyed Easter eggs !

At Canopea, we love getting crafty with the kids and also making things inspired by nature. When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to cook hardboiled eggs which we hand painted with gouache (not exactly eatable and we always ended up making a big mess !), but we loved taking part in the festivities so much and getting into the whole Easter mood. This year, I’ve decided to go for something a little more swift and nature inspired. I came across this fantastic recipe for marbled easter eggs from ohsobeautifulpaper.com, how cool are these ? You can try it with food colorants if you don’t have the time, but we’ll try it with beetroot!

Supplies for the dye:

  • 6 medium beets
  • vegetable peeler, knife, slotted spoon/strainer
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar (extra to deepen color)
  • large saucepan .

Supplies for making the eggs:

  • Hardboiled Eggs (preferably white)
  • Small Bowls (to dye the eggs in)
  • Vinegar
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Spoon
  • Paper Towels

Preparing the dye

Begin by adding the water to the saucepan and bringing it to a boil. While the water is heating, peel and chop the beets into chunks. When the water is boiling, add the beats and the vinegar and simmer for 25-30 minutes. Remove the beets with a slotted spoon (or pour through a strainer), leaving just the dyed water.

To make the eggs

Step 1. Take your beetroot juice, add a dash of vegetable oil (or any other oil you might have in the house), and swirl around with a spoon. The marbling pattern on your egg will be determined by the size of the little oil bubbles floating around the dye bath, so for a more marbled look be sure to give that oil several stirs!

Step 2. Wearing gloves or using a spoon, submerge an egg in the dye bath, rotating it fully to make sure that the entire surface makes contact with the oil bubbles on the surface of the dye bath. Remove from the dye bath immediately and pat dry with a paper towel.

We loved making these, and so easy! Hope you will make some too…
