Holidays in France and a change of scenery: unusual accommodation
![]() |
Looking for a change for your summer vacation? Why not treat yourself to an unusual vacation in a cabin, a caravan, a yurt, or a barge? Well-suited to family getaways, these unique accommodations will perfectly satisfy your need for nature and a change of scenery close to home.
Sleeping in a cabin in the middle of nature
Spending the holidays in a cabin is an option that should appeal to children! Cabins have become so popular in France that it's not uncommon to see them even on campsites! But you might be dreaming of an authentic cabin in the heart of nature, a place where the alarm clock would be replaced by the sound of birdsong. These places do indeed exist: tree houses, waterfront cabins, floating cabins, ecological green spaces, etc., they will satisfy your desire to reconnect with nature. These peaceful havens with a rustic appearance still have basic amenities: running water, electricity, toilets, bathroom, refrigerator, and hotplates. Some cabins can even offer much more: spa or jacuzzi, breakfasts served every morning, activities and leisure activities, etc. There really is a cabin for everyone. In a meadow, in the forest or on the water, simply equipped or more comfortable, you will definitely find the one you dream of for your vacation.

Caravans, a bohemian family vacation
Another unusual vacation option: a stay in a caravan. This type of nomadic accommodation allows you to live at a different pace and fully enjoy the landscape. Pulled by a horse (or sometimes donkeys), the caravans move at the pace of the animals, that is to say... slowly. Suffice it to say that you don't travel more than fifteen kilometers per day, a perfect pace for stressed city dwellers! And what about caring for the horse? Don't worry, you can embark on this adventure even if you have no experience with carriages. You'll be explained how to feed and care for your traveling companion before you leave. There's a good chance you'll become friends with your children, who will be happy to take care of him. If horses aren't your cup of tea and the nomadic lifestyle doesn't appeal to you, there's another option for your vacation: renting a caravan permanently installed on a plot of land. The experience is quite similar to what you might get in a cabin, with the added bonus of a gypsy atmosphere, of course!
Yurts, another vision of camping
Another alternative holiday accommodation option: yurts. This traditional habitat of Central Asian nomads seems to have adapted well to the French climate. You can rent a yurt in any region of France, for one night or the entire holiday. Spacious and comfortable, yurts are well-suited to families. Inside, you have real beds, equipped with mattresses and pillows, and everything you need for cooking (stove and refrigerator). Made from wood, horsehair, and felt, the traditional yurt guarantees optimal comfort, in both summer and winter. Its rounded canvas and wooden floor appeal to holidaymakers seeking authenticity. The skylight, placed in the center of the roof, provides beautiful natural light and a nighttime journey into the starry summer sky!

A holiday on the water on a barge
For you, vacations are only possible with your feet in the water. Barges will certainly satisfy your desires for swimming and fishing. France is rich in canals and rivers suitable for barges (Canal du Midi, Canal de Briare, Canal de Nantes à Brest, etc.), on which you can spend a pleasant family vacation. No need for a boat license to pilot a barge. In less than an hour, you will learn how to steer the boat, moor it, and pass through the locks. Even children can pilot it. They will be happy to take over from you as ship captain! At 8 km/h, barge trips last a long time. This leaves time to enjoy the roof terrace, where you can eat, read, or sunbathe. It is also used to store bicycles, which are generally included in the rental of your barge. They will be very useful to you during stopovers, for going hiking, swimming in a lake, having a picnic in a natural setting, going to a restaurant, exploring a town, village or remarkable site, or... shopping.
