Econyl® Fiber : a committed textile
Wanting to consume better by buying products that respect the environment and the people who produce them also requires paying particular attention to materials. Spotlight on Econyl®, a recycled fiber from which our anti-UV swimsuits are made.
When fashion fights against ocean pollution
Concern for waste is at the heart of the circular economy. It is no longer just a question of trying to reduce waste production, but also of recovering it to make it a source of raw material. This reflection gave rise to Econyl®, a textile fiber made from nylon threads from fishing nets that pollute the oceans. Created in Italy by the company Aquafil, one of the world leaders in polyamide production, Econyl® not only helps to clean up the oceans but also gives these fishing nets a second life. The nylon thread thus created has the same qualities as a new nylon thread!
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, "abandoned equipment in the oceans represents 10% of marine waste". 10% represents 640,000 tons of waste! Fishing nets that not only pollute the seas and oceans, but also represent a considerable danger for aquatic fauna. By continuing for years to capture and trap many animals, these abandoned nets are responsible for what is called "ghost fishing". In very concrete terms, for 10,000 tons of Econyl® nylon thread produced, the reduction in CO2 emissions reaches 57,000 tons and the saving of crude oil 70 tons. Figures that speak for themselves and make Econyl® one of the champion materials of the ecological transition.

A chic and ethical textile
When you are a brand, committing to the environment is not only about manufacturing in Europe and favoring short-circuit production. It also involves choosing more environmentally friendly raw materials. This is the case for Econyl®, a 100% recycled and infinitely recyclable nylon thread, which is now used in the manufacture of carpets, sportswear and… Canopea’s UPF 50+ anti-UV swimsuits! Choosing Econyl® was perfectly consistent with our approach to sustainability and transparency: manufacturing responsibly and respecting the environment, beautiful and elegant products that provide excellent protection against the sun without any chemical filters. The recycled nylon fiber fabric allows for all this and much more, transforming the tons of waste that poison our oceans into truly eco-responsible quality clothing.
Because it was obviously essential for us that our swimsuits meet the highest regulatory requirements in terms of sun protection, we subjected our fabrics to tests of more than 200 hours against chlorine, UV rays and sun creams. Thanks to a very tight mesh of textile fibers and innovative technology, we managed to obtain a UPF50+ protection filtering more than 90% of the sun's rays, the highest level of classification according to the very demanding Australian standard. A feat made from a recycled material, very soft and wrinkle-free.

Thinking about tomorrow's fashion
Using Econyl® also means laying one of the milestones on which the eco-responsible and ethical fashion of tomorrow will be built. Far from the excesses of fast fashion, overproduction and poor quality raw materials. Far also from the exploitation of men who manufacture clothes in unsuitable workshops at the other end of the world that we consume more than we buy thoughtfully. It is also up to brands to provide the impetus and offer everyone the opportunity to consume differently. And it is with a fishing net abandoned at the bottom of the sea that this can begin!
