The trend of eco-responsible swimsuits

The ethical and responsible fashion trend is gradually gaining ground in all types of clothing. Swimsuits are no exception to the rule and more and more brands are choosing eco-friendly materials or French manufacturing, sometimes even both! Let's take a look at the best in eco-friendly swimsuits.

Ethical and responsible fashion: swimsuits too!

The revolution is underway! Little by little, mentalities are changing and more and more consumers are scrutinizing labels, wanting to know how their clothes are made and in what conditions. While fast fashion brands are still popular, offering constantly renewed collections at low cost, the structure is gradually cracking. Some major brands are working towards greater transparency, gradually lifting the veil on what they had hidden for years.

Faced with these fashion giants, small brands are trying to make their mark by offering real alternatives: ecological or recycled materials, clothes made in Europe under decent conditions and, above all, pieces made to last and not to be replaced the following season. When it comes to swimwear, the possibilities have long been very limited, particularly because of the expected performance: a swimsuit must not become transparent when wet, allow water to drain away, be elastic and not lose its colour under the action of chlorine. Result? Apart from nylon, polyamide or elastane, there is no salvation!

Recycled fabrics or innovative materials to reinvent swimsuit fashion

When an innovation appears and radically changes our daily lives, our reaction is often the same. We exclaim: “Oh my, you really had to think of that!” Fortunately, in the shadows, some people are thinking and inventing the fashion of tomorrow, imagining for us, consumers, the innovations that will one day become the norm. In the highly competitive swimwear sector, this revolution is twofold. It is played out firstly on the materials

● The Econyl ® revolution

Econyl ® is the fabric of the future! Created in Italy by the company Aquafil, one of the world leaders in the production of polyamide, this 100% recyclable textile fiber is made from nylon threads from fishing nets abandoned in the seas and oceans. It is from this innovative material that Canopea swimsuits are made, which are also, thanks to a fabric with very tight fibers and revolutionary technology, equipped with UPF50+ sun protection.

● Recycled polyester and polyamide combined with organic cotton

Some brands choose to make their jerseys from recycled synthetic materials, for example from used plastic bottles, which they combine with organic cotton. An attractive alternative that reduces the resources used for manufacturing and reduces the synthetic content in the finished product.

● Recycled fabrics and offcuts from major fashion houses

What if instead of making new fabrics, we used the surplus of existing fabrics destined for scrap? This is what several brands are offering that make their pieces from fabric scraps. These recycled fabrics thus have a second life and the finished product is generally manufactured in a short circuit.

Many French and European brands are also now committed to manufacturing their swimsuits in France or Europe in manufacturing workshops that offer their workers decent working conditions. The carbon footprint of these pieces is reduced and the circuit taken by swimsuits is thus reduced between the manufacturing workshop and the consumer. This can also be a commitment in itself for consumers who would like to move towards a more ecological and sustainable fashion, without taking the plunge towards models made from innovative fabrics, for example for cost reasons. Choosing to buy a swimsuit made in France or in a European country is a first step!
